What a fascinating old leather-bound Civil War Era photo album! It features the illustrious family of Lura Whitlock Porter. Lura was the 1st wife of Don Carlos Porter, City Attorney for South Pasadena (1897-1904). Porter founded a law partnership with Charles T. Sutton under the name Porter and Sutton. It became one of the oldest law firms in Los Angeles. After Lura’s death Porter married her sister Maud. Both Lura & Maud are pictured here. (In brief online research, I found them both listed as members of Delta Gamma at Stanford University in the late 1800s.)

Lura & Don had one son, Andrew O. Porter. After earning his L.L.B. at Harvard Law School, he was admitted to the bar and practiced in association with his father for ten years. In 1938, Andrew Porter was elected to the City Council of South Pasadena and was appointed Mayor two years later being one of the youngest in the country.

In 1980, Mrs. Andrew O. Porter gifted a large collection of family memorabilia to the Huntington Library in San Mateo, CA. This collection primarily consists of Lura Whitlock Porter’s research concerning her family history. The families include: Copeland, Green, Hogins, Percival, Pool, Porter, Tousey, and Whitlock.

According to the (loose) title page, the album was a gift “To Ma from Will. Thankfully, “Ma” completed the index so we know the identities of these folks (even married names of many of the girls/women)! Handwritten names of identified subjects:
•Hannah Jeanette Pool
•William Cheselden Pool
• ? Caroline Pool Balsley
•Simeon E____ Pool
•Hannah Mary Pool Whitlock
•Sarah ____ Thompson
•Henry Gray “Ben” Whitlock
•Benjamin Caleb Whitlock
•Mary Lura Whitlock Porter
•Frances Jeannette “Fannie” Whitlock
•Maud Whitlock Porter
•Ogden Whitlock (cousin)
•Fenton Booth (cousin) [1]
•William C. Pool, Civil War 1865 [2]
•Maud Whitlock (Albany, NY 1890)
•Adelbert E Gray, Albany, NY
•John Whitlock
•Susie Whitlock
•Simeon E. Pool “Uncle Com (?)(Corn?)”
•Clifford Balsley
•Major James H. Whitlock [3]

Because of fragility of album, I didn’t attempt to remove any CDVs to note studio info on backs. However, two backs were visible and these photographers & locations are:
•C. Eppert, Terre Haute, Ind.
•S. V. Allen, Freeport, Ill.

[1] Fenton Whitlock Booth (May 12, 1869 – July 26, 1947) was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives and later Chief Justice of the Court of Claims.

[2, 3] In the Andrew O Porter Collection at the Huntington Library, there are two letters from J. H. Whitlock written in 1861 that discuss the secession crisis with gusto; the third dated 1898 describes his civil war service, probably for a memoir. There are 27 civil war letters written by William C. Pool, dating from 1861 to July 1865. These letters describe the siege of Vicksburg and the Red River Campaign. There are 6 post-war letters and a note for what appears to be a memoir or a regimental history. William C. Pool is shown in uniform in first listing photo.

[3]James Henry Whitlock (May 15, 1829 - July 11, 1901) served in the California legislature and during the American Civil War he served in the US Army.

Album only boasts one of the original two beautiful brass latches The cover and index page are both loose, as is the last empty page. It measures approx 4-1/2 x 6 x 3” thick. It has much wear, as expected of a 150 year old (or so) album that was often looked at (please see all photos). There are 6 tintypes & 39 carte de visite (CDV) photos.
